A Peregrine falcon, adjudged as fastest animal on Earth – when in a dive, which flew into Nigeria from Finland, has been reportedly killed in Ofagbe community in Delta state.

BIGPENNGR.COM reports a Twitter user @wakajugbe shared photos of the dead bird, saying it was reportedly killed at the Isoko community.
The bird, according to picture shared on Twitter had a tag attached to it which read “Museum 200L Helsinki Finland”.
The Peregrine falcon soars to a great height, then dives steeply at speeds of over 200 miles (320 km) per hour.

“This peregrine falcon was killed in a town called Ofagbe in Delta State. The bird flew all the way from Finland to Delta State as the tag on the bird read ” Museum 200L Helsinki Finland” he tweeted.

BIGPENNGR.COM inquiry to University of Helsinki, Finland’s largest, oldest and internationally most esteemed research university to confirm if the bird was actually a research bird from the institution was yet to be answered as of press time.

Meanwhile, the development has started drawing reactions from Nigerians on the social media.

Some commenters believe the bird must have been ostensibly mistaken for a ‘witch bird’ (birds related to witchcraft) hence it was hacked to death by the locals.

BBNaija 2020 winner, Laycon reacted to the tweet expressing his disappointment about the killing  of the bird.

“This is the fastest animal on earth y’all just killed” he wrote.

“This is a research bird owned by the University of Helsinki. Birds are often released by research institutes for study & experimental purposes hence the tag. Also, birds seen as “last of their kind” are also released for procreation & preservation. IT’S A RESEARCH BIRD!!” another respondent, @Kaylechi_wrote.

BIGPENNGR.COM recalls in February this year, a similar incident happened somewhere in Delta state where a West African Manatee was dragged down the street in a horrific manner and killed by some youths.

The development which attracted the reaction of the Minister of State for Environment, Mrs Sharon Ikeazor, who vowed to investigate the matter, following a trending video, was described by many as ‘’distressing’’, ‘’distasteful’’, ‘’disgusting’’ and ‘’horrific’’, a captured manatee in Delta was seen being dragged on bare ground to a cruel fate by some youths.

Many people who responded to the minister’s statement also vehemently condemned the action of the youths, suggesting that the Ministry of Environment needs to carry out aggressive public enlightenment/conservative education for inhabitants of Niger Delta and other coastal region on the importance attached to protection of sea animals.

Delta State Government had also reacted and described the development which  embarrassed the state as inhuman act, saying that “anybody caught killing such animal will be jailed”

“We condemn in its entirety the inhuman act of the unidentified youths whose actions have become an embarrassment to the state.

“The state government seriously frowns at the actions of these youths which negates the Bonn Convention on Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals.

The government hereby warn that anyone caught hunting protective animals within the state, will be arrested and prosecuted in line with relevant laws of the land”, the state government had said.
