Delta Govt Recognises Journalist, Whiskey As Idjerhe Monarch

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has approved the appointment of veteran journalist, HRM Monday Obukowho Whiskey, as Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom in Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.

His appointment followed his installation fortnight ago as Udurhie 1, Ovie-elect of Idjerhe Kingdom.

The governor announced the confirmation of his appointment on Tuesday during the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Asaba, the state capital.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, who announced this in a statement, disclosed that the approval was part of resolutions reached at the State Executive Council meeting.

Aniagwu added that the Presentation of the Staff to the new Idjerhe monarch would soon be announced by the government.

BIGPEN recalls Whiskey was installed few weeks ago following the traditionally laid down selection processes, ending month-long tussle over the stool in the second largest Urhobo kingdom with over forty communities and rich in crude oil production.

He emerged monarch almost two years after the former traditional ruler, HRM Edward Igho Otadaferua, Erhiekevwe 1, joined his ancestors in 2018.

Until his installation and subsequent government appointment, the veteran journalist who had spent over three decades in active journalism practice, was the South-South Regional Editor of National Daily Newspaper.

He was the first Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the pioneer executive chairman of Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC) between 2007 and 2010.

Whiskey, who had his first and second degrees in Mass Communication, is a current PhD student at the Delta State University, Abraka.
