Gunmen Kill Four Soldiers On Escort Duty, Two Civilians In Bayelsa River

Four soldiers and two civilians have been reportedly killed by gunmen in Lutegbene river in Bayelsa state.

The attackers are suspected to be sea pirate who have been terrorising the area for some time now.

The attack is coming barely a month after a similar attack allegedly by pirates who abducted three foreigners and killed four naval ratings at Agge, a boundary community between Bayelsa and Delta States.

It was learnt that the soldiers and civilian were on-board an oil vessel which was being escorted along the Bayelsa river to Delta state.

The vessel took off from Port-Harcourt, River state but was waylaid about 5: pm Sunday evening around Lutegbene, an area prone to pirates attack in Bayelsa.

Meanwhile, in a bid to track the attackers, the army have deployed personnel to Lutegbene community.

But the locals, on Monday said that the army invaded their community and burnt down some houses.

Bayelsa Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Asinim Butswat was yet to confirm the incident as of press time but a top security source in Delta confirmed it.
