Frankland Briyai, a former Cross River state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) who was last week reported to have been sacked by the Independent National Commission, (INEC), says the electoral umpire doesn’t have the powers to sack him, saying he voluntarily resigned his appointment to pursue his governorship ambition.

Briyai, said that INEC was misquoted in its statement about his resignation, saying that when he contacted INEC headquarters, they told him, the news about his purported sack is a fake news.

The former Airforce officer and Lecturer, spoke on Wednesday shortly after meeting with the APC executives in Yenagoa to inform them of his intentions to contest the forthcoming governorship election.

According to him, his alleged sack reports where fake news and handiwork of mischief makers who are bent on tarnishing his reputation.

He said, “INEC did not say so, I officially and legally resigned my appointment, and INEC can attest to that.

“I have contacted INEC headquarters, and they sad the news about my sack is a fake news. INEC said that they didn’t say anything like that. I am sure that if you have watched, or maybe read INEC publications or press statements you will not find anything like sack, because I resigned officially on the 8th of this month.

“My departure created a vacuum and INEC tradition is that once there’s no REC, the administrative secretary takes over, that was what INEC meant, INEC did not mean I was sacked. Please don’t misquote INEC.

“Briyai, said his appointment was by the President and approved by the senate
and therefore he cannot be sacked by INEC.

On his mission to APC office in Yenagoa, he said, “I came to inform the APC
family that am a registered member of the party and Intend contesting the
November 16 governorship elections.

“I have very good things for Bayelsa. It’s going to be good human capacity development, Infrastructural development. As you know if you have been here for some time you will discover that bayelsans are suffering unemployment, and some of them can’t even go to school, some that are even working are not paid salaries as when due”.
