Nigeria’s anti graft agency, Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) may go after some officials of the Amnesty Office soon, owing to a petition from concerned youths from the Niger Delta region.

A youth group under the auspices of “Serving and Leading Without Bitterness Initiatives” had petitioned the commission over alleged ‘diversion’ of education funds of the Amnesty office running into over N467million naira.

In the petition filed before the EFCC, dated 1st of February, 2018 and made available to newsmen in Yenagoa, the group alleged that despite the performance of President Buhari’s administration, fraudulent practices by some undisclosed officials will throw spanner into the wheel of progress in the amnesty office.

The group maintained that the recent criticism of administration of Brig. Gen Paul Boroh (redt) was due to the alleged fraudulent attitude of the said officers.

The petition signed by Nature Keighe, Paulinus Albany and Teke Iyala, alleged that between the Education desk of the Amnesty office and the management of listed training universities, an alleged sum of over N467 million has been ‘diverted’ into private pockets.

They however rose in defense of President Buhari and Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Implementation Committee, Brig.Gen. Paul Boroh (retd), saying that the lasting peace in the region was a result of the proper funding and robust implementation of the program.

According to the petition, “the fragile peace being enjoyed in the region is due to the fulfillment of the promises made by President Muhammadu Buhari and the doggedness of the Amnesty Implementation Committee headed by Brig. Gen. Paul Boroh.

“But when some persons at the helm of Authority starts playing to the gallery for immediate gains, it may scuttle the  good works of President Buhari in the Amnesty office and Niger Delta region and plunge the region into another round of pandemonium if immediate steps are not taken.”

The group alleged that despite these listed achievement by the Amnesty office, some staff of the Education desk have allegedly disregarded due process thereby underming constitutes authority.

“This is an act of impunity that is capable of instigating crises in the region with some ex-militants being short changed. Some hundreds of ex-militants and other beneficiaries were deprived and chances sold out to well to do citizens, family, feiends and sexual partners.”

They therefore call on the EFCC to urgently intervene and investigate these atrocities committed by the Education desk of the Amnesty office to restore harmony and build on the existing confidence built over the years.
