The Publisher of elombah.com and the General Secretary of the Online Publishers Association, OPAN, Daniel Elombah, who was arrested by officers attached to the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Nigerian police on New Year’s day, has been released conditionally.
It could be recalled that the United Kingdom-based attorney was arrested alongside his brothers from their family house in Edoji-Uruagu Nnewi, Anambra State, Eastern Nigeria in the wee hours of New Year’s day.
The online publisher was arrested over an opinion written by another writer on social media network, Instagram which was published on his platform, elombah.com.
Elombah’s wife had told ALEDEH that her husband and his brothers were held under duress, stressing that she was terrified.
“My husband was arrested in the wee hours of today. He is being held under duress. They told us they were acting based on orders from above”, Mrs Elombah told ALEDEH.
“I was terrified and still in shock. My kids are crying asking of their father’s whereabouts”, she lamented.
Though Elombah has been released, his brother Tim, who is the editor of elombah.com is still in detention, ALEDEH can report.
Despite regaining his freedom, Elombah says he is not completely free as he has been told not to leave Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, where he and his brother were transferred to from Anambra state, Southern Nigeria, where they were arrested.
While Elombah is not completely free, there are also indications that his brother Tim might spend more days in detention, this is because there is a plot to get a remand to keep the elombah.com editor for twenty (20) more days, ALEDEH has learnt.
