A pro-PDP group, Ughelli North Youth Vanguard, (UNYV) on Sunday stage a peaceful protest condemning the alleged imposition of non-sellable candidates by the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) on the good people of Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta state.

The protest which caused restrictions on vehicular movement for several hours in Ughelli metropolis was over alleged imposition of a chairmanship candidate by leaders of the party.

Some of the placards bore by the protesters had the inscriptions: ‘We say no to candidate imposition by our party PDP’, ‘We need due process in Ughelli North, ‘Don’t destroy the party legacy, ‘We need free and fair primaries as we say no to politics of blindness, ‘Don’t make 2019 difficult for PDP’ among others.

In a statement made available to newsmen, the group appeal passionately to the executive governor of Delta State, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to urgently intervene and stop the calculated attempt by self-styled leaders of the party using impunity.

The statement reads: “We the above concerned PDP and card-carrying members of the party in Ughelli North have watched with nostalgia and utter bewilderment the plot to impose on us a non-sellable candidate on the party in the forth coming elections.

“It is to our chagrin that the power that be, have concluded plans to carry out this satanic act plan which in our opinion would spell outright doom for our dear party and it may interest your excellency to note that the culture of impunity which led our party into losing the last presidential election in 2015 is about to be reenacted in Ughelli north.

“Primary is the only means with which any candidates could emerge for elections, thus making the process to be transparent without rancor as the loser knows he will lost at the battlefield and congratulate the winner. The merit inherent in using primaries need not to be overemphasized for any reason as it is there for all discerning eyes to see.

“It is therefore in the light of the foregoing that we were shocked beyond words to learn that some powers from Asaba who are not even of the Ughelli North extraction have concluded plans to an unsellable candidate on us in the forthcoming chairmanship election slated for January, 6, 2018.

While appealing to Delta State governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to urgently intervene, the group chairman and secretary, comrade Vincent Adjanakpo and Lloyds said, “we made bold your Excellency to ask all contestants to go to the field as all other local governments in the state are doing, it will be anti-democratic to impose a candidate on us and the local government in the coming election.

“They held that, the party by this action is sitting on a ‘Keg of gun powder because the act is laughable and will out rightly spell doom for our dear party the PDP in 2019 general election as mass defection would erupt should the alleged plot is successful and the local government would never survive the fall

“These clans, Uwheru, Evwreni, Afiesere Ododegho, Oteri, Eruemukohwarien Otovwodo and Ogor are appealing to the leaders of our party, with all matter of seriousness to conduct opened primaries were the best candidate should emerge and not by imposition of un-preferred candidates because that is the right thing to do to avoid mass defection and tsunami of the party in the near future; listen to the voice of the people if really the party motto is power to the people” it warned.

According to them, the name of governor Okowa will be written gold as a leader if he can use his good office and primaries are conducted as against the impunity of imposition and it would further compound the woes of the party if the candidates are imposed. A stitch in time saves nine, the group said.
