The Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), Delta State Chapter, has alleged that there is huge scam going on in the issuance of National Drivers License by personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who reportedly go about collecting outrageous sum from motorists against the N6,350 approved by the Federal Government for the issuance of vehicle license.

The group alleged that officials of the FRSC within Warri, Effurun, Udu and Asaba were notorious for the unlawful collection which is done with impunity and as a norm within the establishment.

Delta State Chapter Chairman of CDHR, Prince Kehinde Taiga made this allegations in a statement entitled, “Committee for the Defense of Human Rights Delta State Chapter to Mobilize a Peaceful Protest Against Federal Road Safety Corps for illegal Extortion on National Drivers License,” obtained by BigPen Online on Thursday.

According to him, the FRSC Command in Delta State keeps extorting Deltans between N18,000, N25,000 and other unstable prices for the acquisition of the National Drivers’ License against the approved N6,350 by the Federal Government.

“We are compelled to make this findings public because the extortion has become a norm among road safety personnel. As a human right body, we can no longer sit in our comfortable zone while our state continues to burn under the gross and brutal extortion by the Federal Road Safety Corps.

“FRSC officers have vowed to frustrate anyone who fails to comply with this illegality. If you fail to comply, they will tactically delay or deny you data capturing.

“Therefore we are calling on the Presidency, the Department of State Security, Inspector General of Police, ICPC and other national anti-graft agencies to extend the anti-corruption war to FRSC to probe into the chronic corruption in the establishment.

The group however informed the Delta State Police hierarchy on its planned protest against the FRSC scheduled for Wednesday, 16th August, 2017.

“We also call on all Deltans to join us in the protest and intellectual battle against the FRSC. A stitch in time saves nine.”

But reacting swiftly, the Unit Commander, FRSC Warri Unit Command, Assistant Corps Commander (ACC), Isah Seidu, described the allegation as spurious, unacceptable, cheap blackmail and total falsehood.

He said that FRSC is not involved in collection of money in the chain of agencies involved in issuance of National Drivers License.

Seidu charged CDHR to carry out thorough investigation on who and who is involved in collection of money and extortion rather than labeling FRSC as the agency promoting corrupt practices.

He added however that the responsibility of collection of funds lies with banks as FRSC only provides technical expertise for capturing.

“FRSC is not aware of the allegation and we are not involved at all in collection of money from those who comes to process their licenses.

“It is after the process have been concluded that FRSC comes in. FRSC comes in at the last stage with the technical manpower. I will advise CDHR to carry out proper investigation on this matter before they act in error.”, the FRSC boss added.
