Why Kwara Police Stormed Ibadan to Arrest Tani Olohun — Oyo Command Explains

The Oyo State Police Command has explained the circumstances surrounding an attempt by officers from the Kwara State Command to arrest popular Isese adherent, Abdulazeez Adegbola, better known as Tani Olohun, in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The command said the officers were in Ibadan on official duty to execute an arrest warrant issued by the Upper Ilorin Magistrates’ Court, Ilorin, in connection with allegations of conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the warrant was issued after Tani Olohun allegedly failed to comply with the conditions of bail earlier granted to him, prompting the court to order his arrest.

The development reportedly triggered a confrontation as some residents resisted the officers’ attempt to take Tani Olohun away.

Videos circulating online showed men believed to be police officers attempting to arrest the Isese adherent. One of the officers was seen displaying his identity card after residents questioned the operation.

The situation was later brought under control following the intervention of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police subsequently directed the officers to return to Kwara State and advised the complainant to approach the appropriate court in Ibadan, where the alleged offence reportedly occurred.

The police said the directive was in line with due process and the principle of territorial jurisdiction.

The statement read in part: “The Command wishes to clarify that the officers were acting pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the Upper Ilorin Magistrates’ Court, Ilorin, in connection with allegations bordering on conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

“The warrant was reportedly issued following the failure of the said Tani Olohun to honour the conditions of bail earlier granted to him, thereby prompting the court to order his arrest.”

The command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against actions capable of escalating tensions or disturbing public peace.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that complaints are handled professionally and in accordance with existing laws.
