Rivers Crisis Deepens as Assembly Accuses Gov. Fubara of Alleged Unauthorized Expenditure and Awarding Contracts Illegally

The tense relationship between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly shows no signs of easing, as the Assembly on Thursday leveled serious allegations against the governor.

Speaking at a press conference attended by lawmakers, Speaker Martin Amaewhule accused Fubara of engaging in unapproved spending and awarding contracts to political allies.

“Since September, when we last met with the governor, he has been spending public funds without our approval,” Amaewhule stated. “He has also awarded contracts to cronies, including those responsible for the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly building.”

The speaker maintained that the governor does not seek the Assembly’s approval before spending public funds.

“It’s important to clarify that the governor lied when he claimed he has not been able to meet with members of the Assembly,” Amaewhule added.

He explained that following the end of the state of emergency, a meeting was held involving the FCT Minister, the governor, and Assembly officials. “I was present at that meeting,” he confirmed.

Amaewhule accused Fubara of deliberately portraying a false narrative of communication breakdown to incite tension and potentially destabilize the political climate in Rivers. The Assembly’s statements suggest a deepening rift and renewed political tension in the state.
