Top Military Officers Arrested as Guinea-Bissau Army Foils Alleged Coup Plot

Military authorities in Guinea-Bissau say they have foiled an alleged coup attempt aimed at toppling the constitutional order just weeks before the country’s crucial general elections.

Reliable security sources told Zagazola Makama that several senior army officers were arrested for allegedly plotting to derail the forthcoming electoral process.

The arrests took place on October 30, barely hours before the official commencement of campaigns for the legislative and presidential elections scheduled for November 23, 2025.

Among those detained was Brigadier-General Daba Nawalna, also known as Dahaba Na Walna, who serves as Director of the Cuméré Military Training Centre and previously held the position of President of the Military High Court. He was reportedly apprehended at his residence in the capital, Bissau.

Officials confirmed that investigations are underway to uncover other possible conspirators and to safeguard national stability ahead of the polls.

The development has once again stirred political tension in the small West African nation, which has witnessed a series of coups and attempted takeovers since gaining independence from Portugal in 1973.

Security analysts say the latest arrests highlight the fragility of Guinea-Bissau’s democratic institutions and underscore the challenges facing the nation as it prepares for yet another election cycle.
