Police Arrest Drug Baron, Rescue Kidnap Victim in Delta

A crack squad of the Delta State Police Command, have apprehended a suspected drug peddler with large quality of Illicit drugs at his Effurun’s GRA hideout in Uvwie local government area of the state.

Acting on credible intelligence on a suspected drug peddler, the police team had on October 12 stormed the hideout at Effurun where the suspect simply identified as Igwe Samson (33) was smoked out alongside 39-year-old Sunday Abalum.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe who confirmed this in a statement,on Tuesday, said that upon searching their sienna vehicle, 450 bottles of CSP codeine, 188 bottles of bargadine, 208 sachets of tramadol 100mg, 300 sachets of swinol, 100 sachets of tramadol 500mg, 50 sachets of rophynol, and a big of weed suspected to be cannabis were recovered.

He disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect who was arrested and taken into custody has been in the business for about two years, and usually buys the drug at Onitsha and prefers to travel at night so that he will not be caught easily.

Efforts to arrest his suppliers and receivers are ongoing, he added.

In a related development, police detectives from Ovwain-Aladja division have rescued a kidnapped victim unhurt.

The rescue following a distress call from a man (name withheld ) that on October 12 at about 1400 hrs while they were sleeping, suspected armed men broke into his apartment, attacked, robbed and kidnapped his wife.

Edafe, in the statement, said that the DPO in the area, CSP Friday Ekundayo, in a swift response, had mobilised and led operatives of the division and went after the kidnappers with a view to ensure that the woman is rescued unhurt and the suspects arrested.

He said that the operatives trailed the kidnappers to a forest along Iyara community but following unrelenting effort from the DPO and his men, the Kidnappers were forced to abandon the victim and escape.

“The victim was rescued unhurt and has since been reunited with her family, while manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing”, he added.

In his remarks, the commissioner of Police, Delta Staten CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, while commending the gallantry of the DPO and his men, also advised youths to desist from crime, drug abuse, which is also one of the main drivers of crime.

The CP also cautioned that drug abuse is detrimental to the health and well-being of abusers hence should be avoided.
