Prince Tonye Princewill

In a thought-provoking edition of the interview series “Talk with Oloye”, Prince Tonye Princewill, a philanthropist, engineer, film producer, businessman, and politician l, spoke candidly about his life journey, Nigeria’s political climate, and the future of leadership.

From engineering to empowerment through Film, a petroleum engineering graduate from Imperial College London, Princewill described how he transitioned into Nollywood with a mission: to inform, inspire, and empower.

“My politics is about youth empowerment. I use film to send a message, to empower young people and generate conversation,” he explained.

His filmography includes Nnenda, which spotlighted orphanages, and 76, which portrayed the 1976 Nigerian military coup from a human perspective. His upcoming film 77, already Cannes-bound, underscores his commitment to socially relevant cinema.

“We’re not going to Cannes for the seaside—we’re building a business around film,” he said, revealing new projects on Boko Haram and stories from Port Harcourt.

Politics: “Not for the Faint-Hearted”
Princewill didn’t mince words about Nigerian politics.

“It’s a blood sport. If you’re not ready, stay out,” he said, urging political actors to reduce tensions and focus on the people.

In his home state of Rivers, he expressed disappointment with the divisive political discourse, calling instead for practical, people-first solutions.

“Unless I can help end the suffering, I won’t get involved.”

Leadership: “You Have to Be Cooked”. When asked about traditional leadership in the Kalabari Kingdom or another run for governor, Princewill stressed preparation.

“You must be trained and ready. Leadership isn’t just about titles.”

He recalled shadowing Lagos State commissioners under Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prepare for leadership. Despite his two previous governorship runs in Rivers State, he says the time isn’t right—especially for traditional roles.

“I wasn’t ready. I’m not ready. So I chose not to get involved,” he admitted.

A Prince with purpose, Princewill’s insights reflect a blend of humility, clarity, and responsibility. Whether in film, politics, or cultural leadership, he continues to challenge the status quo with reasoned conviction—and a commitment to positive change.
