IPOB’s Sit-at-home Order Failed In Delta

Published

on

Business owners, schools and corporate organizations on Thursday ignored the sit-at-home order by outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Asaba, the state capital.

The order, it was gathered was not observed in most part of the state capital, though Asaba is a major gateway to the eastern of the country believed to be the strong hold of the secessionist group.

Normal commercial activities reportedly took place at the popular Ogbonogono Market along Nnebisi Road at about noon after traders had earlier observed the daily sanitation rule imposed by local authorities.

Movement were not restricted as commercial vehicles were on the road to convey passengers to their respective destinations.

Findings however show, the ever busy Benin-Asaba-Onitsha expressway witnessed very scanty vehicular traffic apparently for the total compliance in the east.

Also, it was gathered that commercial buses going to Onitsha from Asaba did not work as a result of lack of passengers who had first information that shops at Onitsha might be closed for the day.

Also, in Okwe area of Asaba believed to be the focal area of the group’s adherents on the Delta capital city, schools and shops were closed in compliance with the sit-at-home order, our correspondent reports.

A resident who spoke on the development, Douglas Chukwurah said such an order “cannot and will never work in this part of the country which is the Niger Delta or South-South.

“Those in the South-East can sit at home if they have nothing to do but for us in Asaba, today is not a weekend neither is it a national holiday. People should go about their activities and forget about the directive”, he said.
