Why PSC Dismissed 4 Senior Police Officers, Sanctions 31 Others Over Misconduct

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers for gross misconduct and other disciplinary offences, while imposing various sanctions on 31 others as part of efforts to strengthen discipline and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Police Service Commission (PSC), dismissed the four senior police officers after finding them guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts unbecoming of public officers.
The decision was reached during the commission’s plenary meeting held in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the PSC spokesperson, Torty Njoku Kalu.
Beyond the dismissals, the commission approved a series of disciplinary measures affecting several senior officers across different ranks.
According to the statement, 10 officers were reduced in rank, with three Superintendents of Police demoted to Deputy Superintendents of Police, two Deputy Superintendents reduced to Assistant Superintendents, while five Assistant Superintendents were demoted to the rank of Inspector.
The commission also approved the compulsory retirement of two officers in the public interest.
Other sanctions included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five others, warning letters issued to three officers, and a letter of advice to one officer. Seven officers who faced disciplinary proceedings were exonerated after investigations cleared them of any wrongdoing.
Reacting to the outcome of the meeting, PSC Chairman, Hashimu Salihu Argungu, reiterated the commission’s commitment to enforcing discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
He stressed that the commission would not condone acts of indiscipline among police personnel and would continue to ensure that officers found guilty of misconduct face appropriate sanctions.
Argungu added that the commission remains committed to promoting accountability, professionalism and integrity within the police force in line with its constitutional mandate.
