Court Clears Goodluck Jonathan for 2027 Presidential Race, Dismisses Eligibility Suit

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cleared a major legal hurdle ahead of the 2027 political season.

This comes as a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, dismissed a lawsuit seeking to block him from running in the next presidential election, firmly declaring him eligible to contest.

Presiding Judge Justice Peter Lifu threw out the suit, labeling it “frivolous” and an “abuse of court process.”

The legal challenge, brought forward by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, was dismantled after the court ruled that the plaintiff lacked the locus standi (legal standing) to file the matter.

Justice Lifu noted that Jideobi failed to prove any personal injury or loss resulting from Jonathan’s potential 2027 presidential bid.

Adding a heavy financial penalty to the dismissal, the court sustained a previous ₦20 million fine against Jideobi and slapped him with an additional ₦1 million in costs, to be paid to the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Justice Lifu held that the issue of Jonathan’s eligibility was already settled law.

He cited previous matching verdicts from both a Federal High Court in Yenagoa and the Court of Appeal.

As a lower court judge, Lifu stated he was legally bound by the appellate court’s superior decision.

The ruling is bound to supercharge political speculation, injecting fresh momentum into conversations regarding Jonathan’s potential alignments and candidacy as the 2027 presidential race begins to take shape.
