…Blames substandard, fabricated cylinder for incident

NIPCO Gas Limited has suspended the operations of a CNG station in Eyean, Benin City, Edo State where a CNG vehicle exploded.

The suspension, according to the company, was a precautionary measure of solidarity with those impacted by the incident.

The company, in a statement, however clarified that the CNG vehicle that exploded at its CNG station, on Wednesday was installed with a substandard and fabricated cylinder.

The statement explained that the cylinder unit which exploded after it was filled with 4SCM of gas was not designed for CNG

The statement added that even though there were no fatalities recorded, one person suffered a leg injury while another sustained an eye injury.

It added that the driver fled the scene immediately after the incident occurred.

“Both victims were promptly rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Based on the attending doctor’s recommendation, one of the individuals will require surgery at a different hospital. Our team is ensuring they receive the necessary care and treatment.

“The incident was immediately reported at the local police station, and the police have taken custody of the fake cylinder pieces and impounded the car involved in the incident.”

The statement added that the incident underscores the dangers of unauthorised CNG installations by unqualified technicians using non-compliant cylinders, which have always campaigned against.

“We are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to prevent a recurrence and reinforce our commitment to public safety across all operations.”

“We remain resolute in our efforts to provide safe and reliable infrastructure for the growth of CNG as an alternative automotive fuel in Nigeria. We assure the public and our valued customers that safety remains paramount in all our operations.

“NIPCO Gas Limited will continue to uphold the highest industry standards to ensure the well-being of all stakeholders.
