Former Director General of the Labour party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr Doyin Okupe, has been reportedly released by the EFCC after he was early today arrested by the Department of States Service, DSS, at the Muritala Mohammed Airport Lagos.

Okupe who was arrested and handed over to the EFCC, was later released this afternoon, according to a source

One of his lawyers, Tolu Babaleye, had early raised the alarm that Okupe was on his way to London when the DSS intercepted him at Muritala Mohammed Airport Lagos.

He alleged that the DSS asked him to provide court processes where he paid the fine option following his money laundering conviction by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The lawyer had demanded the immediate release of his client.

He said: “The reason according to source is that he was asked to produce evidence that the Federal High Court Abuja has freed him from the case in which he was convicted and paid fine to the knowledge of the whole world and was allowed to go home.

“When will this harassment stop? Who is after Dr Okupe? As at today, the man has no case to answer. I hereby demand that the DSS should release my client immediately as this is a violation of his freedom of movement, right to liberty and dignity of human person. This is unfair as the man’s health is fast failing.”

DSS spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya, who confirmed the arrest, said Okupe was intercepted by the DSS at Terminal 1 of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos this morning at the instance of the EFCC.

He has long been handed over to the Commission which requested for the action. Okupe was billed to fly to London via Virgin Atlantic.

But in a tweet, after he was released, Okupe said the EFCC apologised for the error.

”I was arrested & detained @ the MM int airport, Lagos this morning 12th Jan on my way to UK for medical, yrs of my passport being withheld by the FHC Abuja,” he said.

”I have just left the EFCC office where senior officers in lagos or Abuja apologised to me for the error. Occupational hazard abi?”
