Epic Reactions

There were epic reactions on the timeline of Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, after he announced that President Donald Trump has been blocked indefinitely from Facebook and Instagram.

BIGPEN reports that Mark Zuckerberg had initially announced the blocking of Trump’s account for a shorter period of time but on Thursday extended the blockage “for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”

The development, however, have drawn mixed reactions with many on social media condemning Zuckerberg for censorship of opposition voices.

Zuckerberg had argued that an extension was necessary in the interest of a peaceful transition of power to the incoming president-elect Joe Biden.

Making the announcement on his Facebook timeline Zuckerberg said:

“The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden.

“His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world. We removed these statements yesterday because we judged that their effect — and likely their intent — would be to provoke further violence.

“Following the certification of the election results by Congress, the priority for the whole country must now be to ensure that the remaining 13 days and the days after inauguration pass peacefully and in accordance with established democratic norms.

“Over the last several years, we have allowed President Trump to use our platform consistent with our own rules, at times removing content or labelling his posts when they violate our policies. We did this because we believe that the public has a right to the broadest possible access to political speech, even controversial speech. But the current context is now fundamentally different, involving use of our platform to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government.

“We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great. Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”

Meanwhile, below are some of the reactions trailing Zuckerberg’s decision to wield the big stick against Trump.

Where was your out rage 6 months ago when half the country was on fire i dont understand the obsession and hatred for one person im tired of watching grown adults acting like a bunch of over tired toddlers we have to do better American.
You silenced anyone posting the rally yesterday and stopped all the videos of people going live to show what was really going on! You make the choice of what you think people should see or hear! You have caused some of division of America also!
Mr. Zuckerberg, you are no different from Donald the Trump if you use your overarching power to block him. He was supported by over 70 million voters. He represents their aspirations. However reprehensible and obnoxious his views maybe to you, they are his views and he has a right to air them. Censorship of alternative views is not democracy. He has 13 days. Let him ventilate. My people say; “if you allow a man have his say, he will respect the verdict of the elders, but if you stifle his voice, he will always return to remind you.” Trump can tweet, post in FB, IG, TG et al but it changes nothing.
Very sad. I see that freedom of speech on your social media platforms is only for the Democratic Party, and fact checking doesn’t apply to them.
Your a joke. An extreme leftist. Your social media platform played a part in the rigged election.
Ridiculous!! You are absolutely ridiculous!! Everyone in America has Freedom of Speech on this platform except the President of the United States because You, Do not agree with his stances.. you are the shocking one . Must be nice to sit back and decide at who does and doesn’t have access to your platforms while sitting high in your Mansion.. Im taking my toys and going home.. kinda what it sounds like to me!
The truth is that you want to support communist actions so you took the freedom of speech away from President Trump.
You have no room to talk as you’ve been part of the problem. Censoring others with different views has only incited more crap. You are part of the problem in the division of our great nation.
I don’t care what your opinion is! You have sewed division in this country for years now. You are a true threat to this democracy not Trump. You sir are unhinged and dangerous.
Man, I pray section 230 gets overturned, so we can all band together and sue you for violation of anti trust laws…. you won’t get away with any of this! Facebooks days are numbered!
While I do not agree with what happened yesterday, isn’t the action you are taking part of what created the problem? The problem is that people thought the media and social platforms stole part of the election by disseminating information in a manner they wanted. You are proving right now, at this crucial time in history, that the media and social platforms do just that.
Great move. But in Nigeria you promote the contrary in areas of human rights abuses, misgovernance, insecurity, impunity and blatant violation of the constitution by state actors! Shame.
Americans don’t understand or know how the world now perceive you all.
Your nation has seemly lost its place as the custodian and example of Democracy, world over.
What would now be of all the USAID governance programmes. So many politicians won’t see the value add or basis for Americans to speak off or commend other nations to follow democratic tenets or principles.
It’s just a complete shame, what happened yesterday.
Facebook you’re making me proud today, like you often do. This is not an easy call to make. Thank you for putting safety of the people and country first.
Mark- when you take away people’s own thoughts and ideas that is Censorship.
