The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Zanna has denied reports that there was an assassination attempt on the All Progressives Congress, (APC), senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District in the red chambers, Olorogun Ovie Omo-Agege.

Zanna told BigPen Online in a telephone conversation on Sunday that what happened at the scene of Omo-Agege event was a mob action by irate youths.

Omo-Agege had alleged that two bullets were shot at him at the event by thugs whom he identified as “Ayeye” and “Ngozi”.

According to him, two party members also received bullets shots and were hospitalised.

“There is Igho Majemite. There is Wilson Oki. These are all known thugs in Uvwie.  I don’t know who sent them to assassinate me.

“But I was lucky because the bullet grazed through my right ear. If I was not lucky I would have been dead.

“Two bullets were shot at me; one was shot by Ayeye and another bullet was shot at me by Ngozi and also, my brother was shot”, Omo-Agege alleges.

He told newsmen earlier on Saturday that his wife, family members and party members escaped assassination attempt and had reported the alleged incident to police in Ekpan and also the Commissioner of Police for prompt action.

But the State Commissioner of Police, Zanna who confirmed BigPen Online earlier report said in a telephone conversation on Sunday that Omo-Agege actually reported the incident but the incident could not be described as an assassination attempt as evidence show it was a mob attack.

He said that it was not possible for the supposed assailants as claimed to attempt taking the life of the Senator in an open event where his own security details were also around without an exchange of gunfire.

According to him, the claims of assassination by the senator were unfounded as such should be dismissed, adding that the State Police Command was not aware of any such assassination attempt on the senator.

The police commissioner maintained that he doesn’t know about any assassination attempt on the senator, asking if he does not have policemen with him.

He said that the senator only reported a case of attack by thugs at the Ekpan police station.

His words: “he reported a case of attack by thugs during an empowerment program but I don’t know where the assassination attempt is coming from. Didn’t he have policemen with him.? As a Senator, going for an empowerment program, will he go empty handed.” the CP queried.

“Senator Omo-Agege has access to police and security operatives and when going for such empowerment program, its his duty to inform the DPO and the Area Commander to provide him with security.

“If you are going for an empowerment program are you not supposed to tell the police that you will do empowerment program and they should provide you policemen for security cover, is he not having police operatives with him.”

He said that it is unfortunate that people just wake up to allege assassination attempt but when making such allegations, they have no substantial proves to back it up.

The Police boss however said that many politicians make allegations without prove for political gains.
