Presidency Debunks Viral Claim on Nigeria Name Change, Sharia Law Abolition

Published

‎The Presidency has dismissed a false and misleading  viral report alleging that President Bola Tinubu plans to initiate constitutional amendments to change Nigeria’s name to the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the northern region.

‎This was contained in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga,Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy on Thursday 21, of May 2026

‎According to the statement, President Tinubu has no intention of sending any bill, allegedly code-named “Project True Federation,” to the National Assembly by December 15, as claimed in the viral story.

‎The Presidency accused unnamed political actors of spreading the false narrative in a bid to sow disaffection, stir political crisis, and destabilize the country as election campaigns approach.

‎The Presidency further described the report as fake news designed to mislead Nigerians and create unnecessary political tension ahead of the general elections

‎”It stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria are subject to a rigorous legal process and cannot be carried out at the whim of the President or lawmakers. Such amendments, the statement noted, require a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly and the approval of at least 24 State Houses of Assembly” he said

‎Reaffirming the administration’s priorities, the Presidency said President Tinubu remains focused on deepening economic reforms and delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians rather than engaging in politically divisive distractions.
‎he added

‎Tinubu further urged Nigerians to disregard the viral report in its entirety and exercise caution against fake and inflammatory stories aimed at creating disorder in the polity.
