The election of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, (CDHR) in Delta State to elect state’s officials, was on Tuesday, disrupted as thugs molested and chased away two national officials of the body sent to the state to conduct the election.

The suspected thugs were said to have harassed National Legal Adviser, Mr. Henry Ekine Eqs. and Idris Afeez, Publicity Secretary respectively.

Ekine, who was the returning officer, had to halt the election when one of the thugs shoved his hand into his eyes.

The election was being conducted at Ekete Community, Udu Local Government Area when it suddenly became chaotic and came to an abrupt end around 7:30 pm Tuesday night.

A member of the CDHR in the State, Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen who confirmed this to newsmen, on Wednesday, blamed the immediate past Delta State CDHR Chairman, Comrade (Elder) A.P. Edariese for the situation.

He alleged that the thugs were mobilised to the venue of the election in Ekete to purposely disrupt it.

Agberen claimed that trouble started when it was discovered that Comrade Edariese is trying to impose his son as the new state chairman, a move which was vehemently resisted.

“We’re getting information today (Wednesday) that Chairman went to his house in Owhase and handpicked some persons. His own Vice Chairman, he hand picked and made him chairman through this illegal process”, Agberen claimed.

CDHR National Legal Adviser, Ekine is yet to reply to a text message sent to him to confirm his position on the matter.
