Delta Commissioner Resigns From Office Amid Council Election Controversy

Delta State Commissioner for Education (Technical), Joan Onyemaechi, has resigned from her position to support her younger brother’s bid for a second term as Chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area.

The move comes amid controversy and accusations of imposing her brother on the people, despite the council chairmanship rotating among three clans of Ogwashi Uku, Ubulu-Ukwu and Nsukwa.

“I refuse to be blackmailed by those who see politics as their farmland. I perfectly understand what it means to have power and to be in power,” Onyemaechi said, dismissing the accusations.

Addressing her church congregation, Onyemaechi announced her resignation, stating, “I have decided not because he’s my brother, but because the position is zoned to our clan… I went to my boss, the governor, and appealed to him that I wanted to resign so that my brother can go back to the council to do his second tenure, which is due to my clan.”

Onyemaechi’s resignation has sparked debate, with some seeing it as a move to maintain family political dominance, while others view it as a sacrifice for her brother’s political ambition.

The council polls are scheduled for July 13, 2024.
