Monoyo Edon, a chairmanship aspirant for Warri South local government area under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has explained why he decided to pay the WAEC registration of indigent students in his Atuwatse II College, Ifiekporo Warri and other communities within the council area.

Edon, who doubles as Media Assistant to former governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, gave the clarification following a social media post where some people had demanded Christmas Rice from him.

Explaining the rationale behind his decision, Edon said; “As someone whose late mum did menial job to raise my WAEC registration fee many years ago, I understand how hard it is for indigent people to joggle providing rice and chicken for their families while also saving up for an external exam registration for their children.

“For some reason, exam registration always coincides with the Yuletide. In fact, this understanding inspired the second item of my R.A.I.I.S.E Agenda (Around Education) for a Greater Warri South.

“For some years now, I have been supporting people in a very small capacity but this Yuletide, I decided to invest my widow’s mite into reaching as many persons it can carry because it is quite a lot to register for external exams as the economy bites even harder.

“I would have loved to also share rice and chicken but I can’t afford to split it. Investment in education is always far reaching.

Edon, however said that because they say ‘charity begins at home’, he had already picked three students in his community school – Atuwatse II College, Ifiekporo Warri to begin irrespective of tribe, stressing, “Just be an indigene of Warri South to be eligible”.

Commending Edon for the kind gesture toward parents and indigent students this Yuletide season, Gbubemi Awala, maintained that when he made the social media post, he never expected a quick response but was shocked when Edon called him to make the offer.

“Yesterday I cried about lack of Rice for loyal people like me and just this morning Mr Monoyo Edon called me with a good news that is better than Rice.

“Mr Monoyo Edon explained the need for parents to prepare for life after the Yuletide period. He said that parents find it hard to pay school fees of their children in January and he will prefer to invest in Education that is a long term project than to invest in distribution of Rice that is a short term poverty alleviation scheme.

“Due to the large number of returning school students and students eligible for WAEC. Mr Monoyo has offered to pay the WAEC registration (N50,000) for performing students in Warri South that are unable to register for this important Exam.
