Two Years After, Voters Are Yearning To Remove Okowa From Office, Says Senator Omo-Agege

Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta State, Olorogun Ovie Omo-Agege on Saturday said that there is intense yearning by electorates in Delta State to flush out Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP from Government House, Asaba.

Omo-Agege who spoke to newsmen in an interactive session in his country home, Orogun, Ughelli North Local Government Area, said that Governor Okowa was on his way out of Government House Asaba because according to him the governor has failed in his performance to get the electorates to vote him again come 2019.

He said that it is very unfortunate that Governor Okowa has squandered the goodwill he enjoyed in 2015, stressing that come 2019 he will be voted out because his poor performance is so obvious and glaring to the people.

Omo-Agege said that there is so much unhappiness in the state with Okowa on the saddle, pointing out that people are yearning for change because everything he is doing is wrong.

He however expressed disappointment that Governor Okowa had failed to  respond to the issue of blank budget allegations leveled against him by former Deputy National Chairman of defunct Ali Modu Sheriff-led factional PDP, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, saying that instead of addressing the issue, the government has resorted to insults and personal attacks.

“Cairo Ojougboh recently dropped a bombshell but till today I haven’t seen what journalists have done about it… and I have also not seen any objective response by Governor Okowa about addressing the issue, it has been personal attacks, personal attacks without addressing the issue.

Senator Omo-Agege who also spoke about other sundry national issues, said that the governor has failed to tell Deltans what he has been doing with 13% derivation funds since he assumed office in 2015, adding that it was time the people challenged the state government on the use of funds that supposedly ought to accrued to DESOPADEC.

He also challenged Deltans to ask questions about governance of the state, expressing concerns, however that journalists in Delta State are not doing enough to investigate activities of the Okowa administration, especially as it affects the alleged spending of N164 billion on roads’ construction by the administration.

When asked if APC was prepared to win elections in the state with the crisis allegedly rocking the party, Omo-Agege explained that there are no internal crisis in APC in the State, contrary to insinuations that the leaders of the party were running at cross-purpose.

According to him, like every other political party, including the PDP which also have pressure groups, APC has it own pressure groups that are being used to forge alliances, maintaining that once a credible governorship candidate is picks every one, and groups would fall into line.

“There is a hunger to reclaim Government House. The people of Delta state are suffering. The people of Delta state want change. They gave Okowa the benefits of the doubt but the man has failed. Teachers are in pain, civil servants are crying, they can’t even fed themselves, pensioners can’t get their entitlements, in fact everyone is in trouble in the state and they are in a hurry to get rid of Okowa so I can assure you we will win come 2019.

Continuing, he said, “All we are doing is chopping for a good candidate, an acceptable grassroots candidate. A candidate that the electorates will own and call their own and who can wipe Okowa out of that place and we are very confident about winning.

Besides, he said that he wasn’t supporting state police because the police apparatus was already being abuse and used by the incumbent Governor to watch hunt opposition and social critics.

“As the Senator representing Urhobo nation, I will not support creation of state police because it is not in the interest of Urhobo people at this point in time for us to have state police created. Even right now, with the police being a federal police, we have seen how the Chief Security Officer of the state has abused that position to maltreat those he is ‘governing’.

On the alleged inconsistencies in the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission DSIEC, law (amended) and assented to by Okowa recently, Omo-Agege said that if the concerns raised by Deltans on the inconsistencies in the law are not addressed before the forthcoming local government election in the state, the state government shouldn’t rule out the fact that some persons or groups may head to court to challenge the legality of the law.

Speaking on his effort at the red chambers, the federal lawmaker however mentioned that he has so far sponsored four bills, including a bill for an Act to Establish the National Electoral Offences Commission Establishment and for other Matters Connected Thereto, 2017 which he co-sponsored alongside Sen. Abu Kyari, an Act to establish the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, FUPRE Electoral Act No. 6, 2010 (amendment) bill 2016 and a bill for an Act to prohibit sexual harassment in educational institutions and for Matters Concerned therewith.

He also disclosed that he has so far influenced eight projects to his constituency including the upgrade of existing Town Distribution Network (TDN), including installation of 11KV/415V, 500KVA transformer substation in Ughelli as well as empower several indigent indigenes and petty traders in Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta State.
