Why NAFDAC Is Still Struggling to Crackdown Banned Sachet Alcoholic Drinks Nationwide

The illegal production, distribution and sale of banned sachet alcoholic beverages have continued despite the expiration of the compliance deadline, prompting the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to intensify nationwide enforcement operations.
The agency said the renewed crackdown is aimed at removing prohibited alcoholic products from circulation and ensuring that manufacturers, distributors and other offenders are prosecuted in line with relevant regulations.
NAFDAC has also appealed to market leaders, motor park operators and members of the public not to permit the sale of sachet alcoholic drinks or alcoholic beverages packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200 millilitres within their premises.
According to the agency, the enforcement action is intended to protect public health, particularly among minors and other vulnerable groups.
The ban on the production, distribution and consumption of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200 millilitres was introduced as a public health measure based on available evidence and directives of the Federal Government, including resolutions of the Senate.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, warned manufacturers and distributors who continue to produce or trade in the banned products despite the expiration of the compliance period.
She also cautioned members of the public against obstructing or assaulting NAFDAC officials during enforcement operations.
Adeyeye said the ongoing nationwide mop-up exercise would be sustained and would not be treated as a one-off operation.
AIT reports that she further warned that prohibited alcoholic products found in circulation would be confiscated and destroyed, while individuals and organisations involved in their production, distribution or sale would face appropriate legal actions.
