Democracy Day Protest: Civil Society Groups Rally in Lagos Over Insecurity, Economic Hardship

Civil society organisations on Friday staged a peaceful protest in Lagos, condemning the country’s worsening insecurity and economic challenges while calling on government authorities to take urgent measures to address the crises.

‎According to Punch, the demonstrators, who gathered at the Ikeja Under Bridge on June 12 to mark Democracy Day, marched toward the Lagos State House of Assembly, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs as they expressed concerns over rising insecurity and deteriorating living conditions across the country.

‎The protesters accused government officials of failing to adequately tackle security threats and the economic difficulties confronting millions of Nigerians. They urged authorities at all levels to implement policies aimed at improving public safety, reducing hardship, and restoring citizens’ confidence in governance.

‎Security personnel were deployed to monitor the procession, which remained peaceful throughout the march.

‎The protest formed part of Democracy Day activities, with participants insisting that democratic governance must translate into improved welfare, security, and economic opportunities for citizens.

‎The demonstrators reiterated their demand for immediate action to address the nation’s security challenges and economic struggles, stressing that Nigerians deserve a safer and more prosperous future.
