‎2027: Sowore Pledges Mixed-Income Housing Revolution

F‎ormer presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has unveiled plans for an ambitious nationwide public housing programme aimed at addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit if elected president in 2027.

‎In a statement released on Thursday via his official X handle, Sowore said his administration would return Nigeria to “full mass public housing,” promising to eliminate what he described as discriminatory housing policies that separate low-income earners from other social classes.

‎According to him, the proposed housing initiative would focus on developing mixed-income estates designed to accommodate workers, students, families, and communities in an inclusive environment.

‎“We will build mixed-income housing estates with green spaces, schools, malls, theatres, clinics, playgrounds, transport access, and community facilities built into them,” Sowore stated.

‎Sowore criticised what he called decades of corruption and elite domination in Nigeria’s housing sector, alleging that public lands and housing projects intended for ordinary citizens had been diverted for private gain.

‎“For too long, corrupt elites have hijacked land and houses meant for the people, using stolen public funds to build mansions they don’t even live in. That era will end,” he said.

‎The former presidential candidate said his administration aims to construct one million affordable public homes across the country, describing the project as environmentally responsible and designed to guarantee dignity for Nigerians regardless of economic status.

‎He added that the housing programme would form part of a broader social welfare agenda focused on urban development, accessibility, and improved living standards.

‎Sowore further describe the initiative as “an unprecedented new era of public housing” for Nigeria as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
