Delta CP Orders Thorough Probe as Police Allegedly Assault Woman with Over Forty Cane Strokes

The Delta State Police Command has began probe into a viral video where some police allegedly assaulted a woman and subjected her to over forty strokes of cane.

The probe followed the directive by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, for immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations captured on a video which has gone viral on social media where the victim narrated her ordeal.

Delta state Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe who confirmed this development in a statement on Saturday, said that preliminary steps have commenced to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident and to establish the identities of the officers involved.

Edafe said that the matter has been referred to the appropriate investigative unit for discreet handling, while efforts are ongoing to ensure that all personnel implicated are identified and brought to account.

“In light of this, the command urges the victim and the activist to please visit the command and provide all necessary information that will help to identify the officers alleged and also aid the ongoing investigation”, he added.

The Command, he said unequivocally condemned any form of assault, brutality, or abuse of citizens, adding that such conduct is inconsistent with the ethics, standards, and core values of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commissioner of Police, in the statement reiterated that the Command will not tolerate any action that violates the rights and dignity of members of the public.

The CP warned that any officer found culpable will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and other extant regulations.

He emphasised that under his leadership, professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights remain non-negotiable.

The Commissioner of Police assured the victim of the Command’s commitment to justice, including confidentiality, protection, and full institutional support throughout the investigative process.

“The victim is hereby urged to contact the Command through the Office of the Police Public Relations Officer or the Complaint Response Unit via 09155570008, 09011112311, 09064308018, or 09066575187 to assist ongoing inquiries.

Members of the public who may have useful information, eyewitness accounts, or additional video evidence are encouraged to come forward to aid the investigation”, the statement added.
