Crisis Rocks Delta North APC as Ward Chairmen Demand Suspension of Congress Over Alleged Imposition

Crisis is currently brewing in Delta North chapter of the All Progressive Congress as Ward chairmen of the Senatorial District have called for an immediate suspension of the ongoing ward congress in the area, demanding a fresh and transparent process that clearly allocates positions between old and new party members.

In a protest letter addressed to the Delta State APC chairman, Sobotie Omeni, the ward chairmen urged party leadership to halt the exercise and restart it under a framework they described as open and constitutionally compliant.

According to them, the new process should spell out a clear sharing formula between longstanding party faithful and recent entrants.

The chairmen said the current consensus-based congress method in Delta North is vindictive and inconsistent with the party’s constitutional provisions.

They argued that the procedure has sidelined existing grassroots leaders and weakened internal democracy at the ward level.

They further alleged that loyal party members who worked for the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election are now being marginalized in the ongoing arrangements.

The letter claimed that some individuals who previously belonged to opposition platforms, including figures who ran on rival tickets, have recently joined the APC and are being favored in the congress structure.

According to the protesting chairmen, these new entrants are motivated less by commitment to party ideology and more by what they described as political self-preservation and a desire to regain relevance.

They expressed concern that the influence of these new members could undermine party cohesion and discipline at the ward level.

The signatories maintained that ward chairmen are being targeted because of their resistance to any internal moves that could work against the president’s expected re-election bid.

They said their positions at the grassroots make them critical to safeguarding party interests, which has made them subjects of internal pressure under the current consensus model.

They called on the state leadership of the party to intervene urgently to restore fairness, transparency, and constitutional order in the Delta North ward congress process.

The letter was signed by ward chairmen representatives from the nine local government areas in Delta North Senatorial District.

The signatories are Frank Asimoye representing Aniocha North, Onwuemene Gabriel (Aniocha South), Pastor Andrew Ehiyem (Ika North East), Nduka Erikume (Ika South), Kenneth Akadidi (Ndokwa East), Ochonogor Benjamin (Ndokwa West), Okocha Patrick (Oshimili South), and Emma Odogwu Chukwuekwu (Oshimili North).
