The 133 Cardinal electors who gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel on Thursday have reportedly elected the new Pope.

The development was confirmed by the sighting of white smoke from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel, signalling the dawn of a new pontiff.

The cardinals made their choice after two days of convergence in the Vatican as the world prepares for the new Pope to lead 1.4 billion Roman Catholics.

As of the time of this report, the identity of the new pope was yet to be revealed but he is expected to appear at the central window of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Vatican further confirmed the news via a post on its official X account, writing, “White smoke! The 133 Cardinal electors gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel have elected the new Pope.

“He will appear soon at the central window of St. Peter’s Basilica.”
