VeryDarkMan Freed After Five Days In EFCC Custody Following Public Outcry

Controversial social media figure Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after a five-day detention period.

His release was confirmed late Monday, May 6, 2025, by prominent human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore via his verified X account.

Sowore stated, “Thanks to the unrelenting efforts of all, @thatverydarkman has been released from unjust detention at the @officialEFCC! He is with his ebullient lawyer, @adeyanjudeji.”

VeryDarkMan’s release follows a period of intense public pressure, including widespread social media campaigns and advocacy from civil society groups, legal professionals, and notable Nigerians. Many had publicly criticized his arrest as excessive and potentially politically motivated.

The EFCC had initially taken Otse into custody on Thursday, May 2, 2025, citing multiple petitions related to alleged financial crimes.

The anti-graft agency claimed he had repeatedly ignored requests to appear for questioning, necessitating his detention.

The EFCC also stated they had obtained a lawful remand order and offered administrative bail contingent on meeting certain conditions.

Throughout his detention, critics, including his legal counsel Deji Adeyanju, raised concerns about the EFCC’s handling of the case and alleged violations of Otse’s rights.

The circumstances surrounding his arrest, including claims of being trapped in a bank and taken without clear charges, further fueled criticism.

Otse’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, who actively campaigned for his release, was present with him following his freedom. Supporters are viewing this development as a triumph for civil liberties and a demonstration of the impact of public advocacy.
