Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta state, Godwin Ogorugba, has urged the executive of local government Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), to prioritise peace especially during its forthcoming election.

The council chairman who gave the charge Thursday while receiving on a courtesy visit the NULGE electoral committee and aspirants in his office in Ozoro, enjoined to conduct a free, fair and credible election and the election should not be seen as a do or die contest.

“D not to see the election as a do-or-die matter, but rather as a family affair, after the election, you will all continue as staff of the council. The welfare of staff should be paramount and over any attempts at blackmail by those seeking to lead. I want to make it clear that I have no personal interest in this election. I will work with whoever emerges as the winners.

“Therefore, I urge you all to see this contest not as a do-or-die situation, but as a family affair. I have intervened solely for security reasons and not because of personal interest. I do not support the imposition of any candidate, which is why I advocate for allowing everyone to run.”

Ogorugba therefore encouraged the contestants to conduct themselves peacefully and to embody a spirit of good sportsmanship throughout the contest.

In a brief speech, the Head of Personnel Management of the council, Mrs. Irene Onwodi, expressed appreciation to the chairman for holding the meeting and mentioned her intention to convene a similar meeting to address the contestants.

Mrs. Onwodi also advised the candidates on the importance of sportsmanship, discouraged any tendency toward cabal behaviour.

In a meeting held at the Exco chamber of the council after petitions were filed, Ogorugba emphasized the importance of unity and respect for office hierarchy, saying that “I firmly believe in maintaining a proper leadership structure, and it is important for subordinates to respect and collaborate with their superiors,” he stated. It is essential to consider the long-term relationships that go beyond any single position.”

He drew a parallel from the biblical story of Elisha serving under Elijah, highlighting the value of loyalty and the rewards that come from working harmoniously within a team even as he reiterated his commitment to supporting the union in fostering growth within the transport sector in Owhelogbo and Isoko North at large.

The union members collectively agreed to foster cooperation and recognized the leadership of Comrade C. Anthony, clarifying that there would be no recognition of any factional leadership.
