JUST IN: Pope Appoints Rev. Fr. Ewherido As Bishop Of Catholic Diocese Of Warri

Newly appointed Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, Rev. Fr. Anthony Ewherido

Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido as the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Warri.

BIGPEN NIGERIA (www.bigpenngr.com) reports that Ewherido’s appointment was announced on Wednesday by the Archbishop of Archdiocese of Benin, Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze.

Akubeze had been the Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Warri after the retirement of Bishop John Okeoghene Afareha in April, this year.

A statement from the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, indicates Ewherido who emerged the second indigenous Bishop of the diocese after Afareha, until his appointment was the Rector of Saints Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Ibadan, Oyo state.

Fr Ewherido was born on Oct. 8, 1960, in Eghwu, in the Diocese of Warri. After attending the Minor Seminary in Effurun, he completed his philosophical and theological studies at Saints Peter and Paul Major Seminary in Ibadan.

Later, at St John’s University and Fordham University in New York, Fr Ewherido earned a Doctorate in Biblical Studies. He also obtained a Diploma from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome.

He was ordained a priest on Oct 18, 1986, incardinating in the Diocese of Warri.

He hails from Ewu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
