President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism that the country will surmount its current state of insecurity with the newly appointed service chiefs in charge.

BIGPENNGR reports that President Buhari spoke after his flight touched down at about 5:pm on Thursday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, the nation’s capital from the United Kingdom where he had been for weeks on medical holiday.

Buhari had left the country at the heels of multifaceted cases of insecurity confronting several part of the country particularly some Northern and South Eastern States of the federation.

Prior to his return, there had been uncertainty over when the President will return back to the country to face his responsibilities, especially in the light of insecurity and economic challenges.

Recall that Buhari left the shores of Nigeria on Tuesday, 30 March, 2021 for the United Kingdom for a routine medical checkup.

The Presidency had in a statement explained that he is expected to return to Abuja the following week but he never did.

However, addressing newsmen after he landed Abuja, Buhari spoke of the performance of the new service chiefs so far, saying they (Service Chiefs) are doing their best but that he only hopes their best is good enough for Nigeria.

He said: “Oh yes, they have been in the system all the way, they know what is wrong, they know what is right and I think they are doing their best. I hope their best will be good enough for Nigeria.”

BIGPENNGR had reported that Buhari, speaking at a ceremony to decorate the new service chiefs with their ranks at the State House Abuja, told the service chiefs to speed up their actions in freeing the country from the current state of insecurity.

He assured them of his firm support as they deliver on their responsibilities. “I have accepted responsibility for your actions in the field; it’s up to you to identify your competent officers irrespective of seniority and paper qualification and deploy them to make sure that we secure this country.

“We all look forward to you to perform and I as the Commander-in- Chief, I am backing you hundred per cent, and I expect you to effectively deploy your officers and men to secure the country,” the President had said.

The new service chiefs are; Major General Lucky Irabor, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao as Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff respectively.

Specifically speaking on the appointment of the acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba who was decorated on his absence by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Mr Buhari said that his expectation from the IGP are high.

Fielding questions from journalists on arrival to Abuja after 16 days in London for a routine medical checkup, Buhari said that among those presented by a committee set up by the minister of Police Affairs, Baba came tops because he knows the job and has attended the required trainings that would help him deliver on his new assignment.

According to Buhari, “Well, we went through the system, there was a committee by the Minister of Police Affairs, they gave me some names and he happened to be the one chosen. He knows his job, he has been in it for a long time, he went through all the trainings, he has the necessary experience. So, we have a high expectation from him.”

Asked on how he felt after his medical checkup in London, he said; Yes, it went very well,” adding that he has returned to continue with his duties.
