UN, Nigeria, Dismiss Claims Of Purported Nation Called UNO State Of Cameroon

The United Nations Office in Nigeria and the Federal Government on Saturday debunked speculations making the round that a new country would be craved from part of Nigeria and Cameroon.

This comes even as the former Director General of the National Boundary Commission, Dahiru Bobbo, had earlier refuted claims that Nigeria may lose 24 Local government Area councils to a proposed new UN State.

BIGPEN had reported based on report in the The Guardian that by July 10 this year, Nigeria may lose 24 local councils, by way of ceding, to a new country to be known as United Nations Organisation (UNO) State of Cameroon at its borders with la Republique du Cameroun.

According to the report, while conceiving the new state, the former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan invited former President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria and Biya of Cameroon to sign documents respecting their countries’ international boundaries.

But Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the United Nations Office in Nigeria have described the report as false in its entirety.

In a statement, the UN office and Ministry described the reports as “nothing but fiction”.

The terse statement reads; “According to the false report, the proclamation of the new UNO State of Cameroon by the United Nations, as alleged, was slated for July 10 2020.

“The trashed report was based on a misrepresentation of the Greentree Agreement between Nigeria and Cameroon.

“The agreement was signed on June 12 2006, by former President Olusegun Obasanjo for Nigeria, and Paul Biya for Cameroon.

“It was the formal treaty which resolved the Cameroon-Nigeria border dispute over the oil and natural-gas-rich Bakassi Peninsula.

“UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in addition, said the UN does not create States”.
