Heavy smoke bellow the air from an illegal refinery site that was set on fire by men of the Nigerian Army in a Delta state community, BigPen Online can report.

The wide fire which started from the illegal refinery site was sighted around Okpare-Olomu communities and around the bridge area.

A source hinted that soldiers of the Joint Task Force, codenamed Operation Delta Safe had discovered an illegal refinery site around Okpare where bunkerers were refining crude oil into diesel and set the whole place ablaze.

The fire which started over the weekend was still brewing Monday, Ibebe Rufus Akpobome, a citizen journalist who posted pictures of the fire on his Facebook page said.

According to him, the fire was raging on the Okpare community river possibly from a crude oil pipeline or illegal refinery site.

He said that the fire which started since yesterday (Sunday) and yet to be put out by fire service officials, is constituting serious environmental hazards to residents of the area.

Akpobome therefore called on relevant government agencies to come to the aid of the people of the area who bear the brunt of the environmental hazards.

“As we speak… Okpare in Olumu Kingdom is on fire… Smoke everywhere as a pipeline or illegally refined crude products has been set on fire. This fire has been on since yesterday constituting environmental pollution to Okpare-Olomu and it’s environs.

“I wish to humbly call on the government and all relevant authorities to come to the aid of the people”.
