3 Feared Dead, Others ‘Missing’ As FPSO Vessel Explodes In Delta Waterways

At least three persons have been reported dead and many others missing as explosion hit a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading Vessel known as Trinity Spirit FPSO in Ugborodo (Escravos) offshore location, Warri South – West Local Government Area in Delta State.

BIGPENNGR reports that the incident which occured at the early hours of Wednesday, February 2, 2022, have threw the nearby oil producing communities into panic mood.
The FPSO belonging to Shebah Exploration & Production Company Ltd (SEPCOL) in receivership, was said to have blew up at the Ukpokiti Terminal with about ten workers onboard.
As of the time of filling this report, rescue operation was still ongoing according to industry source who said three persons have been evacuated alive and three confirmed dead.
Local sources said they heard the deafening sound of the explosion which occured about 1:00am, followed by billowing smoke which adorned the cloud.
“It causes great panic among workers in the facility and a devastation to the fishing business of locales”, one source said.
The source, an industry worker, blamed ‘equipment failure’ as cause of the explosion from the vessel.

Meanwhile, the Management of Shebah Exploration & Production Company Ltd (SEPCOL) in receivership, have confirmed the unfortunate incident of the fire that engulfed its offshore facility.

A statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ikemefuna Okafor, and made available to BIGPENNGR in Delta State, said the cause of the explosion was currently being investigated and they were working with necessary parties to contain the situation.
“At this time there are no reported fatalities, but we can confirm that there were ten crew men on board the vessel prior to the incident and we are prioritising investigations with respect to their safety and security.
“We appreciate the assistance provided us by the Clean Nigeria Associates, the Chevron team operating in the nearby Escravos facility and our community stakeholders as well as fishermen, who have been of tremendous assistance since the incident happened.
“We have duly notified all relevant authorities and we appeal to the members of the public to stay away from the area while our Crisis Management Team continues to monitor the situation and update all stakeholders with new information as the investigation evolves,” the statement added.
