The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Onoja Samuel, for allegedly firing gunshots into the air during a confrontation with traders at a market in Kubwa, Abuja.

The officer reportedly went to the market armed with a pistol following allegations that some traders had assaulted his wife.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying operatives attached to the Kubwa Police Division responded to a distress call and arrested the suspect after disarming him.

Adeh said the incident occurred on October 25, 2026, at about 1:50 p.m., when the police received a report that an unidentified man armed with a pistol was firing sporadically into the air at the market.

“Upon receipt of the report, police operatives attached to Kubwa Division were promptly deployed to the scene. Following concerted efforts, the suspect was successfully disarmed and arrested,” she said.

According to the police spokesperson, preliminary investigations identified the suspect as Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the NSCDC.

She explained that further investigations revealed that the officer had gone to the market with a pistol after receiving reports that some traders had assaulted his wife.

During the ensuing argument with the traders, Adeh said, the suspect allegedly fired several shots into the air.

The police recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from him during the arrest.

Adeh added that the suspect remained in police custody and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, urged personnel of sister security agencies to exercise restraint and ensure proper coordination with the police when conducting authorised operations within the territory.

“Operatives of sister security agencies are urged to exercise restraint and notify the Police Divisions responsible for the areas in which they intend to conduct sanctioned operations within the FCT, to ensure proper coordination and prevent avoidable clashes,” Sanusi said.
