NAF ATR-42 Crashes in Ondo While on Benin-Lagos Mission
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that an ATR-42 aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday, was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.
The aircraft reportedly crashed in the Igbokoda area, with details of the incident initially unclear as residents searched for the exact location of the crash.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying residents had yet to determine the precise location of the aircraft.
“Yes, it is true. A helicopter crashed at Igbokoda, Ondo State, but we don’t know the exact place and other details,” he said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, also said he was not aware of the incident when contacted.
However, the Nigerian Air Force later confirmed ownership of the aircraft and immediately activated a search-and-rescue operation.
In a statement, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the aircraft was conducting a routine mission when the accident occurred.
“The aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.
“Search and rescue operations, in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies, are currently ongoing,” he said.
The NAF said it remained committed to the ongoing rescue efforts and would provide further information as more details emerge.
