Three persons have been killed and two others injured in separate attacks by suspected herdsmen on Elulu and Agadagba communities in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.

The Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Council, Hon. Adole Gabriel, confirmed the incidents to journalists on Sunday, saying the attacks occurred between Friday afternoon and Saturday night.

According to him, the assailants first invaded Elulu village on Friday where they killed one person, shot another and carted away his motorcycle.

“They later proceeded to Agadagba community to rustle cattle. The villagers resisted them and in the process, one person was shot in the leg,” Adole said.

The chairman added that the gunmen returned to Agadagba on Saturday and killed two more persons.

“As I am speaking to you, I am preparing to visit the communities to commiserate with them. So far, three lives have been lost to the attacks. They injured two persons — the one whose motorcycle was taken and the one whose cows they attempted to rustle. Both are currently receiving treatment in hospital,” he said.

Adole said local vigilantes, in collaboration with the police, have been deployed to the affected areas to prevent further attacks and restore normalcy.

“The governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has mobilised us and we have also mobilised community vigilantes because they are the ones who can access the difficult terrains. I can assure you that with the adequate security provided by the governor in Ohimini, we will apprehend those responsible,” he stated.

“The vigilantes are on ground. These marauders cannot drive us out of our land,” the chairman added.

The latest attacks add to the growing security concerns in Benue communities, which have continued to experience repeated violence linked to herder-farmer clashes.
