Insurgency: Two senior commanders lay down arms, surrender to military in Borno
The Nigerian military has announced the surrender of two senior terrorist commanders to troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Borno State, describing the development as a major breakthrough in ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Media Information Officer of the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Lt. Col. Mohammed Goni, said the two insurgent leaders, identified within the group’s command structure as “Munzirs,” voluntarily surrendered to troops in the Geidam axis before arriving in Maiduguri at about 7:30 p.m. on July 5.
According to Goni, the suspects are currently in military custody, where they are undergoing detailed profiling, debriefing and intelligence exploitation.
He disclosed that preliminary investigations indicate the surrendered commanders occupied influential positions within the terrorist hierarchy and possess extensive knowledge of the group’s operations, command structure and logistics network.
The military said initial intelligence gathered from the debriefing has already provided valuable insights into the terrorists’ operational methods, supply chains and support networks.
It added that the information is expected to boost ongoing intelligence-driven operations aimed at locating, disrupting and dismantling remaining terrorist hideouts across the North-East theatre.
Describing the surrender as another significant setback for the insurgents, the military attributed the development to sustained offensive operations by Operation HADIN KAI, supported by coordinated land and air assaults as well as improved intelligence gathering in collaboration with other security agencies.
Goni noted that the sustained military pressure has continued to restrict the terrorists’ freedom of movement, degrade their fighting capability and weaken their command and control structures.
He said the increasing number of insurgents and commanders surrendering reflects the growing collapse of the terrorist organisation and the cumulative impact of the military’s relentless operations.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the offensive until all terrorist elements are either neutralised or compelled to surrender.
It also pledged to continue exploiting actionable intelligence and working closely with relevant stakeholders to eliminate terrorism and restore lasting peace, security and stability across Nigeria’s North-East.
