No Casualties as Fire Engulfs Diesel Storage Tank in Lagos

‎A fire outbreak involving a five-million-litre storage tank filled with automotive gas oil (AGO), popularly known as diesel, has been successfully extinguished at the Bono Energy terminal located within the Ibru Jetty complex in Olodi Apapa, Lagos.

The incident which occurred at the facility situated along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway, near Coconut Bus Stop.

‎Although there was no casualty, the incident sparked concerns because Apapa is home to several fuel depots and other critical industrial facilities, where fire outbreaks can quickly escalate into major emergencies.

In a statement on Friday, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, said the emergency was reported at 12:04 p.m. Firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu, and Isolo fire stations were immediately dispatched, arriving at the scene within 12 minutes to contain the blaze.

“The incident involved a five-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank, which was engulfed in flames,” Mrs Adeseye said.

She added that the fire was brought under control and completely extinguished by 1:54pm through a coordinated operation involving the state fire service and emergency response teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities.

Adeseye further said the prompt intervention prevented the blaze from spreading to adjoining storage tanks and other critical infrastructure, reducing the risk of more extensive damage.

The controller said no casualty was recorded, adding that the cause of the fire has yet to be determined and is under investigation.

‎She commended the collaboration among emergency responders and other stakeholders involved in containing the incident.
