Democracy Day: Leadership is a Trust Bestowed by the People, Says Okowa

As Nigerians mark this year’s Democracy Day, the former Governor of Delta State and a reported frontrunner for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Delta North Senatorial District ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has sent a poignant reminder to the political class, asserting that leadership remains a sacred trust held on behalf of the citizenry.

In a commemorative message shared on his social media page, the former governor, who recently reshaped the political landscape of Delta State following his high-profile declaration for Senate, emphasized that public office must be driven by accountability and genuine human development.

“On this Democracy Day, we are reminded that leadership is a trust bestowed by the people, one that must be exercised with humility, integrity, and a commitment to improving lives. “Happy Democracy Day”, Okowa stated.

Though brief, Okowa’s message mirrors the foundational philosophy of his eight-year tenure as governor, during which he consistently advocated for people-centric governance.

Political pundits note that the themes of “humility, integrity, and improving lives” heavily echo his historical governance mantras in Delta State.

During his time in office, Okowa anchored his administration on the famous “Prosperity for All Deltans” blueprint, which later evolved into the “Stronger Delta” agenda.

While he held sway as governor in one of his Democracy Day broadcasts, particularly during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic era, Okowa had consistently maintained that democracy loses its flavour if it does not yield tangible economic dividends for the masses.

He had previously stated that a government’s policies must be “stoutly predicated on democratic principles… providing citizens with deserving dividends,” a sentiment that aligns seamlessly with his current call for a renewed commitment to improving lives.

Okowa’s brief but calculated intervention comes at a time of heightened political alignment within Delta State. Having transitioned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC alongside his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the political weight of the former governor is expected to play a decisive role in the 2027 general elections.

Anioma leaders and various political stakeholders across Delta North have already thrown their weight behind the veteran lawmaker and former governor, urging him to return to the Red Chamber where he previously served with distinction.

As the reported flagbearer-in-waiting for the APC in Delta North, Okowa’s emphasis on “internal democracy” and “equal opportunities”—themes he frequently championed during his governorship—will likely form the bedrock of his forthcoming senatorial campaign.

With his latest message, the medical doctor-turned-politician has subtly signaled to both his allies and opponents that his impending 2027 campaign will be fought on the elevated plains of integrity, public trust, and a proven track record of grassroots development.
