JUST IN: Presidency Confirms Three Deaths as Warri–Itakpe Train Derails in Agbor

A passenger train conveying people from Ujevwu train station, near Warri Delta State en route Agbor has reportedly derailed from its track, causing a major accident on the corridor.
Although details of the incident were still sketchy, sources said that about three person loss their lives in the acciden and several other injured.

Confirming the accident in a terse message on Monday night, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said, “the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms a serious train accident at Agbor along the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor.
“Rescue and emergency response operations are currently ongoing at the scene, while relevant authorities are working to ascertain the full extent of the incident.
“Further details will be communicated as they become available”, he wrote.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has confirmed the death of three persons, saying however “all passengers on board have now been accounted for”.
“Rescue and emergency response operations were immediately activated. All passengers on board have now been accounted for.
“Sadly, three fatalities have been confirmed at this time.
“Relevant authorities continue to assess the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while support is being provided to affected passengers.
“The thoughts and prayers of all Nigerians are with the victims and their loved ones.
“Members of the public are advised to rely only on verified information and official updates from the Nigerian Railway Corporation as investigations and response efforts continue”.
