Edo Police Strike Back; All 13 Abducted Passengers Freed After Shootout
The Edo State Police Command has announced the successful rescue of all 13 passengers abducted by armed kidnappers along the Benin–Lagos Road in a daring operation involving aerial surveillance, drone deployment, and intelligence-led policing.
The victims who were kidnapped on May 9, 2026, when gunmen attacked a commercial bus belonging to Young Shall Grow Motors at Ogua Community along the busy highway. The bus, which was travelling from Akwa Ibom State to Lagos, was conveying 13 passengers when the hoodlums struck, shooting a female passenger during the attack.
According to the police, rescue efforts began immediately after the incident, with operatives launching coordinated bush-combing operations that led to the rescue of five passengers, including two adults and three children.
”The following day, security operatives intensified the operation using drones, aerial surveillance, and intelligence-driven tactics, engaging the kidnappers in a gun duel and securing the release of two more victims”. he said
“However,in a major breakthrough, the Edo State Police Command confirmed that the remaining six abducted passengers have now been rescued unhurt, bringing the total number of rescued victims to 13”. he stated
Meanwhile,the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, commended the bravery and resilience of the operatives involved in the operation, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the kidnappers.
Agbonika further reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that intensive bush-combing operations are still underway to ensure those responsible face justice.
