The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed strong legislative and political backing for the creation of Anioma State, with Asaba designated as its capital. He emphasized that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains firmly committed to the realization of the initiative.

Senator Akpabio made this declaration on Wednesday while addressing party faithful at the South-South Zonal Congress of the All Progressives Congress held in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

He also noted that Warri would be the capital of the new Delta, given its existing infrastructure – airport, major oil companies, Seaport, government offices and other substantive structural and administrative establishments in the area.

The high-profile congress witnessed the presence of governors from the six South-South states—Delta , Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River – alongside prominent political leaders and a broad spectrum of party stakeholders from across the region.

Describing the agitation for Anioma State as both compelling and historically justified, the Senate President noted that the proposal represents a long-standing aspiration rooted in equity, administrative efficiency and balanced development.

He further underscored that the initiative—championed by Senator Ned Nwoko has continued to receive sustained legislative attention, stressing that it ranks among the foremost priorities of the 10th Senate under his leadership.

Senator Akpabio said the eventual creation of Anioma State will yield far-reaching socio-economic and administrative benefits. He explained that the proposed restructuring would effectively split Delta State into two viable sub-national entities, thereby promoting decentralization and accelerating grassroots development.

According to Akpabio: “Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko.

“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities. With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta”

The Senate President also called for greater unity, cohesion, and unwavering commitment among the people of the South-South region.

He urged all stakeholders to continue supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration, for sustainable growth, national integration and the well being of the people of the South South and Nigerians in general.

Addressing Journalists at the Congress in an interview, Senator Nwoko said the clamour for the creation of Anioma state was a patriotic and collective agitation of the people.
