Force Hqs Clarifies Misreport on Police Units, Says IGP Orders Reduction, Not Disband Units Entirely

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has clarified reports claiming he ordered the disbandment of all police units and squads at state commands across Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the IGP emphasized that these reports are a misrepresentation of his directives.

The circulating story suggested that the IGP directed the immediate dissolution of tactical units nationwide.

However, DCP Placid explained that the IGP fully appreciates the vital role these tactical teams play in fighting crime, given his extensive command experience across Nigeria.

The IGP is concerned about the proliferation of these units, which have sometimes overstretched police manpower and led to issues impacting the Force’s integrity, the statement said.

“To address these concerns, the IGP has approved a restructuring plan aimed at reducing the number of tactical teams at the zonal and state levels to a maximum of five, and at the area command and divisional levels to three.

:These adjustments can be achieved through merging or disbanding teams, at the discretion of the heads of formations.

“It is important to note that this directive excludes specialized units created by state governments, such as Lagos’ Rapid Response Squad, Oyo’s SRS, and Bayelsa’s Operation DOO-AKPOR.

“The primary goal of this move is to optimize personnel allocation, strengthen police divisions, and improve public confidence by reducing complaints associated with tactical team excesses.

“The IGP’s focus remains on fostering a police force that is accountable, community-friendly, and well-supervised.

The statement held that the restructuring aligns with the IGP’s vision of a disciplined, efficient, and citizen-centric police service committed to ensuring safety and justice for all Nigerians.
