Ibori Doles Out N100 Million to Igbinedion Varsity, Blames ‘Economic Situation’ for not Giving More

James Ibori, former governor of Delta state, says Nigeria’s economic hardship has limited his ability to fully support the growth of Igbinedion University, Okada.

Ibori spoke in Abuja on Thursday at the launch of ‘Chronicles of a Legend,’ the official biography of Gabriel Igbinedion, Esama of Benin.

The former governor announced a donation of N100 million to the institution—N50 million to endow a chair in the economics department and another N50 million for the university’s development.

“For the chair in the economics department, I want to put a very meagre sum,” he said.

“If it were not for the economic situation, I would do everything I can to promote this university.”

Ibori said the gesture was inspired by Igbinedion’s enduring legacy in the education sector.

“I can make this promise because Esama has done his, and it will continue to last, and last, and last,” he said.

He described the Esama as a man who has given his all for humanity.

“Esama established a nursery school, a primary school, a secondary school, and a university,” Ibori said.
“What else can a man do for humanity?”

He also pledged continued support to Lucky Igbinedion, the university’s deputy chancellor.

“Mr deputy chancellor, sir, you will continue to have my support to develop the university,” he said.
