The Supreme Court has unanimously affirmed the re-election of Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a landmark judgment delivered on Friday.

The five-member panel dismissed the appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Timipre Sylva, challenging the November 11, 2023 governorship election.

Justice Garba Lawal delivered the lead judgment, holding that Sylva’s appeal lacked merit and was a gross abuse of court process.

The Supreme Court’s decision upheld the earlier rulings of the Court of Appeal and the Election Petition Tribunal, which had also affirmed Diri’s re-election victory.

The Court of Appeal had, on July 18, dismissed Sylva’s appeal, holding that it lacked merit.

The Election Petition Tribunal had also dismissed Sylva’s petition on May 27, citing a lack of credible evidence to substantiate his allegations against the election outcome.
